What Hail and Wind Do to an Austin Roof

Hail damage is a slow leak with a deadline. Here’s what to look for, and why you shouldn’t wait.

Hail bruises asphalt shingles the way it bruises fruit: the surface looks intact, but the mat underneath is fractured and the granules that protect it from UV are knocked loose. Over the following months the bruise opens, the fiberglass degrades and the roof starts leaking, often long after the storm is forgotten.

Wind is more direct. It lifts shingle tabs, breaks the adhesive seal and creases them along the nail line. A creased shingle will leak in the next rain even if it looks like it’s lying flat. Texas policies also limit the time you have to file a storm claim, so “wait and see” can mean paying for a roof your insurer would have covered.

  • Circular bruises and granule loss on shingles
  • Dented soft metals: vents, flashing, gutters, AC fins
  • Creased, lifted or missing shingles
  • Cracked pipe boots and skylight seals
  • Debris impact from branches
  • Exposed underlayment or decking

How We Handle Storm Damage

Speed matters after a storm. So does doing it properly.

Free inspection, fast

After a storm we prioritize inspections across Austin. Most are scheduled within 24 to 48 hours.

Adjuster-grade documentation

Chalk-marked test squares, photos of every slope and soft metal, and a written summary in the format adjusters use.

We meet the adjuster

When your insurer sends someone, we’re on the roof with them so nothing gets left off the scope of work.

Emergency tarping

If the roof is open, we tarp first and inspect second. Preventing interior damage is part of your policy obligation.

Repair or replace, honestly

If it’s a repair, we repair. If the damage is widespread, we show you and your insurer why replacement is warranted.

Same warranty as any job

Storm work gets our full workmanship warranty and manufacturer coverage, not a rush-job exception.

Beware the Storm Chasers

After every big hail event, out-of-town crews flood Austin neighborhoods with clipboards and “free” roofs.

Many do acceptable work. Some vanish before the first warranty call, and some talk homeowners into waiving deductibles, which is illegal in Texas. We’ve been in Austin since 2014, we’re fully insured, and we’ll still answer the phone in five years. Before you sign anything at your front door, get a second inspection. Ours is free and comes with photos you keep either way.

Storm Damage FAQ

How do I know if my roof has hail damage?

You usually can’t tell from the ground. Look for dents on gutters, downspouts, mailboxes and AC units; if soft metals are dented, the shingles took the same hits. The only reliable answer is an inspection with someone on the roof. Ours is free.

How long do I have to file a hail claim in Texas?

Most Texas policies require you to report a claim within one to two years of the storm date, and some are shorter. Check your policy’s “duties after loss” section or ask your agent. The sooner the damage is documented, the smoother the claim.

Will filing a claim raise my insurance rates?

Claims for weather events are generally treated differently than claims caused by the homeowner, and many Texas carriers don’t surcharge individual policies for a single hail claim. Rates in hail-prone areas rise regardless. Ask your agent for their specific policy.

Can you waive my deductible?

No, and neither can anyone else. Since 2019 it’s a criminal offense in Texas for a contractor to waive or absorb a deductible, and insurers can require proof you paid it. A roofer offering to “eat” your deductible is a warning sign.

What if my insurer denies the claim or lowballs it?

We review the adjuster’s scope against our documentation and request a re-inspection when items are missing. If the disagreement is about whether damage exists, our photos and test squares are the evidence. We’ve helped many homeowners get denied claims reversed.
