Which Shingles Make Sense for an Austin Roof?
Not all asphalt shingles are the same, and the differences matter more in Texas than almost anywhere.
Three-tab shingles are the cheapest option and, in our opinion, the wrong one for Austin. They’re thin, rated for lower wind speeds and bruise easily in hail. Architectural (dimensional) shingles are thicker, laminated, rated for higher winds and carry longer manufacturer warranties. They’re the standard we install.
The upgrade worth considering is Class 4 impact resistance. These shingles pass a test where a two-inch steel ball is dropped from twenty feet without cracking the mat. In hail country that translates to fewer claims, and many Texas insurers offer a premium discount for them that can offset much of the added cost.

Manufacturer Warranties, Explained Honestly
A “lifetime” shingle warranty is a marketing term. Here’s what it actually covers.
Most architectural shingles carry manufacturer warranties described as “limited lifetime” that cover manufacturing defects, typically with full coverage for the first 10 years and prorated coverage after. They don’t cover hail, wind beyond the rated speed or installation errors, which is why the roofer’s workmanship warranty matters. Ours is 2 to 5 years in writing depending on the system, and we register your manufacturer warranty so it’s on file if you ever need it.

How long do asphalt shingles last in Austin?
Architectural shingles are rated for 25 to 30 years, but Texas heat and hail typically bring real-world life to 15 to 25. Class 4 shingles, proper ventilation and light colors all push toward the longer end.
Are impact-resistant shingles worth the extra cost?
In Central Texas, usually yes. They cost modestly more per square, resist the hail bruising that leads to leaks and claims, and many insurers discount premiums for them. Over the life of the roof they typically pay for themselves.
What color shingle is best for Texas heat?
Lighter colors reflect more sun and keep attics cooler. Several manufacturers make reflective “cool roof” shingles in medium shades that look traditional but perform closer to light colors. We’ll bring samples so you can see them on your house.
